Flowers of North Korea

While the official state flower is the magnolia, North Korea has two other flowers, the kimilsungia and kimjongilia that are very much valued as well. The Kimilsungia and Kimjongilia is named after former leaders of North Korea, Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il respectively.

The Kimilsungia on the other hand is cultivated from orchids, and according to the Korean Central News Agency, was chosen to represent Kim Il-sung’s ‘peerless character’ which is ‘blooming everywhere on the five continents’.

The Kimjongilia was cultivated from begonias by Japanese botanist Kamo Mototeru, and was presented as a gift to North Korea to commemorate Kim Jong-il’s birthday. The flower symbolizes peace, love, justice and wisdom. In the movie, ‘Under the Sun’, there are several scenes that feature the kimjongilia.
